If you have used Google Maps until now without a Google account, then you may have noticed that something is off in the past couple of days.
When I launched Google Maps today in Firefox, I immediately noticed that Google was limiting information. Listings did not include user reviews anymore among other things, and Google displayed a disheartening “You’re seeing a limited view of Google Maps” and “Get the most out of Google Maps. Sign In” message at the bottom of each listing I opened.
It appears that Google is limited access for anonymous users. While you can still look up listings, use route planning, and get ads, you won’t get what some what say is the most vital information on Google Maps: user reviews.

Five Google Maps Alternatives
While you could sign-in to a Google account to restore full access, some may prefer switching to a different service entirely.
Here are five good alternatives that you could try:
- Organic Maps — Organic Maps is widely considered the “gold standard” for privacy-conscious users. It is a fork of the original Maps.me, created by the original developers who wanted to strip out all the trackers and bloatware.
- Magic Earth — If you miss Google Maps’ real-time traffic alerts and lane guidance, Magic Earth is your best bet. It manages to offer advanced “smart” features while remaining strictly no-profile.
- OsmAnd — OsmAnd is the most feature-dense mapping app available. It’s not just a map; it’s a professional-grade geographic tool.
- Apple Maps — In mid-2024, Apple finally brought Apple Maps to the web (currently in beta). Unlike Google, Apple’s web version actually functions better without a login, as it currently doesn’t even support signing in to an Apple ID on the browser.
- DuckDuckGo Maps — If you are looking for the most seamless “Google Maps-like” experience in a web browser without ever being asked to sign in, DuckDuckGo is the winner. It uses Apple Maps’ MapKit JS framework, giving you high-quality visuals without the data-tracking baggage.
There are also regional apps and maps that sometimes offer better information and services than Google Maps. Kakaomap, for example, is seen as the superior app in almost any area, if you are in Korea.
Now You: do you use a map app or service? Any app that you can recommend?

Two factors that determine my choices and use of map services:
1- Not concerned by apps given I have no smartphone (only a dummy mobile);
2- Not concerned by user reviews, directions.
I’d avoid Google Maps globally should I not appreciate its Street View feature. Yet, Google Maps was slow to display last time I accessed it directly, years ago. Since, I use a service which does call Google Maps servers but displays their maps, satellite maps and Street View in a far more fluid way:
Instant Street View [https://www.instantstreetview.com/]
The “Promenade des Anglais” in Nice, France?: [https://is.gd/3X3SUM] (shortened long url)
My default Map service is:
Openstreetmap [https://www.openstreetmap.org/]
I also occasionally refer to map services using Openstreetmap data:
Facilmap [https://facilmap.org/]
Openpoimap [https://openpoimap.org/] : nice for Points Of Interest, well done.
Other Maps services not tied to Openstreetmap I happen to visit:
Mapy Maps [https://mapy.com/]
Apple Maps [https://maps.apple.com/] : more for the bookmark, having never been fond of it.
Last but not least, French and France only:
Géoportail [https://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/]
Géoportail Plan IGN [https://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/donnees/plan-ign-v2]
From there on I appreciate Websites that call Openstreetmap rather than Google Maps when mapping is needed. In my experience an increasing number of sites choose this healthy alternative to the omnipotent Google Maps given Google is itself omnipotent, is increasingly as the article’s report of new Google Maps limitations proves it.
I reluctantly use Google Maps (without a Google account) because it unfortunately is still significantly better than any of the alternatives you mentioned. In any case, I don’t really understand why you feel the new inability to access Google reviews should be a compelling reason to switch since (obviously) none of the alternatives can provide Google reviews. So I’m left with better GPS software without reviews which is fine by me as I rarely use them anyway.
Also, most of my Google Maps use in my car via CarPlay and I am pleased that I at least have not seen that annoying message you mentioned on my CarPlay screen (to date, anyway).
If you want reviews without logging in, use Bing Maps. It has Yelp reviews embedded in search results.
Comaps – > https://f-droid.org/packages/app.comaps.fdroid/
Google maps I use in browser, boy ima a “G” hater but never found one better on desktop for my needs. Its the last bit of google i need to get rid of, argh!
But for GPS on the go WAZE. I tried googles app and it was way too many distractions and complexity, it just didnt agree with me. While I would prefer privacy always, i just havent found one that is private and good enough. Hopefully more suggestions will come, already tried several up above and yeah WAZE. lol
1 – I use Organic Maps on iOS and android for offline viewing. You can download an area in Google Maps but it does not have an option to download an entire country [like Singapore] or certain regions of a country in one go unlike Organic Maps.
2 – I use Google Maps logged out when browsing using a desktop/laptop browser
3 – I use Apple Maps when browsing using a desktop/laptop browser and when comparing with Google Maps
4 – I use DuckDuckGo Maps only during web search since DuckDuckGo is my search provider
Maps are for directions, wtf do you need a review for? Are people reviewing the road conditions? “Too many potholes, pick an alternate route!”
I do use google maps on the desktop.(I never **sign in** to anything unless absolutely neccessary) For the car I use Waze **without an account**. I used to use Android Auto, it was awsome, hands free everything! It could even control Musicolet with voice commands. So of course google broke it! “Buy a new car or you can’t use it!” 🙁
I use wego.here.com as an alternative. The Android app is also just okay.
BTW, Why are you blocking access via VPN (Nord)????? It’s quite annoying.
🙂 Thank you for posting! … I’ve been wondering about that.

I use Google Maps without an account, and haven’t noticed this issue (yet). Google Maps is the very last of their services I still use, and (at least in the obscure corner of the world I live in) I find its combination of auto-translated reviews, transit info and streetview more effective than any of the alteratives. It would be nice if Google didn’t encrapify it, but I assume they will, because that is what happens to every “free” online product eventually.
On my phone I use Apple Maps, which after a rough start, is excellent nowadays. However, for PC, hate to say it, but there is still no solid replacement for Google Maps on PC’s. Apple doesn’t seem to be in a big hurry to do much more than have a presence on their PC web based map service, and since DuckDuckGo is basically just Apple maps for their PC version, there’s really no great alternative.
